📖 Our Story
ChopYum started from a simple frustration: finding a genuinely good recipe to cook on a Tuesday evening should not require sifting through fifteen websites, each packed with a life story before you can find the ingredient list. We wanted something better — a place where the recipes are the star, the filters actually work, and planning the week's meals feels like a five-minute job rather than a Sunday afternoon project.
We built ChopYum as a mobile-first experience because that is where real cooking happens — phone on the counter, ingredients spread across the bench, hands slightly messy. Every feature was designed around that moment: a recipe grid you can scroll with a knuckle, ingredient lists you can check off as you go, a grocery list that builds itself.
We are a small independent team of food enthusiasts and developers. We do not have a test kitchen with a professional chef, but we do have strong opinions about mise en place, the importance of properly seasoned pasta water, and why a sharp knife changes everything.
🌱 Our Philosophy
We believe wholesome food does not need to be complicated food. The best meals are often the simplest ones: a properly seasoned piece of salmon with roasted vegetables, a bowl of dal made with love and patience, a weekend shakshuka that turns leftover tomatoes into something extraordinary.
"Wholesome" at ChopYum means food that is genuinely nourishing — not just low-calorie or trending on social media. It means recipes with real ingredients, honest cooking times (not the optimistic 15-minute version that assumes you already did all the prep), and descriptions that tell you what a dish actually tastes like.
We also believe the best diet is the one you can actually stick to. That is why ChopYum supports vegan, vegetarian, and non-vegetarian eating equally, without judgement. We are not here to tell you what to eat — we are here to help you cook it well.
📋 Our Editorial Standards
We hold every piece of content on ChopYum to a clear editorial standard. Recipes are not published until they have been reviewed by a member of the ChopYum team for the following criteria:
Ingredient Accuracy
Quantities, units, and ingredient names are checked for accuracy and internal consistency before a recipe is approved for the library.
Realistic Timings
Cook and prep times are verified to reflect what a real home cook would experience — not an optimistic estimate from a professional kitchen.
Dietary Label Integrity
Vegan, vegetarian, and other dietary labels are cross-checked against the full ingredient list. We use strict definitions, not approximate ones.
Clear Instructions
Steps are reviewed for clarity, logical order, and whether they would make sense to a cook who has never made this dish before.
Food Safety
Storage instructions and any temperature guidance are checked against established food safety standards before publication.
Cuisine Attribution
We take care to attribute recipe origins correctly and describe cuisines with accuracy and respect for their culinary traditions.
🔍 Our Curation Process
ChopYum is not a recipe aggregator. We do not scrape or replicate recipes from third-party websites. Every recipe in the ChopYum library is either developed in-house by the ChopYum team or submitted by vetted contributors and reviewed before publication. Our curation process has five stages:
- Recipe intake: New recipes enter a review queue where basic completeness is checked — does it have all required fields? Are the ingredient sections logically structured?
- Editorial review: A team member reads through the full recipe to verify accuracy, timing, dietary labels, and instruction clarity.
- Contextual enrichment: We add storage guidance, nutrition information, difficulty ratings, cuisine classifications, and editorial cooking notes that provide context beyond the bare recipe.
- Quality approval: Only recipes that meet our full standards are published to the live library. Recipes that need corrections are returned to the intake stage.
- Ongoing maintenance: Published recipes are periodically reviewed. If a user reports an error, it is investigated and corrected promptly.
This process is how ChopYum maintains a library that home cooks can trust — where the serving count is accurate, the dietary label is correct, and the cooking time will not blindside you on a Tuesday evening.
